We are considering/have considered Beatrix as a first name, but we are terrified that someone, someday will shorten it to "Trixie" and then she'll become a stripper and we'll feel like it was our fault. Are we being paranoid?
Hmm...I suppose it could happen later in life. But if you are firm about calling her Beatrix and not allowing other people to shorten it, it won't get shortened right now. And she might insist on having people call her her full name as she gets older and Trixie might not be an option.
HAHAHAH! That is the funniest thing I've EVER heard! I would NEVER have thought of that! (However my husband would have...). I think a little "Bea" running around would be absolutely ADORABLE! If YOU shorten it to something different, chances are it won't ever get shortened a different way. What middle names are you working with???
LOL..this is too funny! All the connotations that go with names are so interesting. I do think you have to be careful and mindful, but I suppose it can be easy to over-think things too. I have a friend who's name is "Bia" and I actually think that's kind of cute. In her case it's not short for anything, but it could work in your case. :)
Hillary...we aren't sure yet about a middle name for Beatrix. J's grandma's name would work, but it doesn't flow quite pefectly in that order (although we like the flow pretty well with Beatrix as a middle name). I guess when I really think about the flow of it (and bring to bear my overdeveloped linguistic analysis born of my English teacher nature), the "x" at the end of Beatrix brings your mouth to a hard stop and blocks the flow of the name with almost any middle name, so really we could use anything that flows with our last name. :)
Melba...I do think Bia is cute! I would never name Clio that because I owned a ferret in college named Bina and it would be too close, but both names are adorable :)
Well, honestly, I think Trixie might be a very natural nickname that could result from Beatrix. Have you thought about using Beatrice instead? I think it might nix the trixie-effect. Just a thought.
I've met a couple little Beatrixes (Beatrices?) and both went as Bea for short, no mention of Trixie at all. (This was over the past 5 years -- no worries about preschool overrun with Beatrices.)
Personally, Trixie makes me think of the Trixie Belden books and get happy and nostalgic.

ReplyDeleteCat, I don't think we'd call her Beatrix every day (although I do love the full name), I think we would immediately start calling her "Bea." :)

ReplyDeleteI would shorten it to Bea and imagine her to grow up to be an potter . . . but I'm biased that away! :-)
